The Numbers Behind Facebook Flyers
Although I’m a tech geek at heart I try to post about non technological stuff in our blog and bring you some of the best questions and answers people post in Yedda. This time, please excuse me, but I will get a little technical.
I just read a great post over on Mashable about the revamped Facebook flyers advertising system (originally from allfacebook). Palin Ningthoujam describes how they work and what they are all about but doesn’t touch an amazing issue I am intrigued about.
By shear size, Facebook is an enormous census of millions of Americans and people of different nationalities all around the world. The data about all of these people is very valuable and sensitive and Facebook does a good job of keeping it safe (hopefully). But, for the first time (as far as I know), Facebook has made public anonymous details about its users.
When using Facebook Flyers and choosing a demographic to advertise to, Facebook tells us how many people are available for that demographic. For example, when choosing male college alumni that majored in Business management that are also married you get a demographic of 520 men, but changing the selection to “single” results in 1820.
Much of the actual information about people in Facebook isn’t available because many don’t update all of their details but the numbers are still very large and statistically sound. I find this very interesting and I can’t stop fiddling around with it. There is so much free information in this system and I’m sure there are many uses for it. I’m not sure what all of them are so I posted a question about it on Yedda (feel free to answer!).
By the way, if you are not all that into Facebook you can get some good QnA in Yedda and catch up. Oh, and we also have a Facebook application.
update: Apparently this is hot news – Just read about it on Techcrunch too
